Port en Bessin is situated mid-way between the British, American and Canadian beaches of the Normandy
landing's of World War II.
The region is steeped in history, with Bayeux
and its famous Norman tapestry only ten minutes drive away.
- GOLF - the 27 hole Omaha Beach golf course is a few minutes from the cottage
on the edge of town, and offers a fine restaurant with delicious lunchtime and evening menu's.
- BEACHES - Omaha beach is 9k away to the west, with the towns of
Vierville sur mer, St Laurent sur mer and Coleville sur mer. Juno and
Gold beach are the same distance away to the east, with the towns of Courseille
sur mer and Arromanche. All provide miles of clean, safe, accessible sand's to play on.
- WALKS - several dedicated walks around the town are detailed in
the information file in the cottage, it is possible to walk a coastal route
eastwards to Longue sur mer and the WWII German gun batteries
- SHOPS - there are various gift shops to browse, a
traditional clothes shop, patisserie's and boulangerie's, and two supermarkets to choose from, as well as
the chandlers and fishing tackle shop. There are two banks with ATM's.
- RESTAURANTS - Port en Bessin has at least six restaurants plus
café’s and bars, many serving the locally caught scallops,
moules and oysters and the traditional Marmite (a fish casserole).
Calvados and cider kir Normande are special treats to try. The local
cheeses are also prominent on menu's. Calvados is a strong
apple brandy, especially from Valleé d’Auge, used in many
regional recipes

- CAR BOOT SALES - from spring through to
Autumn there are countless Vide Greniers across the area where you can
while away hours hunting out that special bargain.
- LOCAL MARKET DAYS - Port en Bessin - Sunday. Bayeux - Wednesday
& Saturday. Courseulles sur Mer - Tuesday & Friday. Grandcamp
Maisy - Tuesday & Saturday. Many markets have cooked food
stalls, where tempting dishes are freshly prepared for you to take away
and enjoy without the preparation or the washing up. Bon
